Remote work is currently considered one of the most popular ways of corporative organization nowadays. It has allowed us to continue with the usual operations and activities that have been worked in the different industries and niches to which multiple companies are dedicated.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, traditional companies had to adapt this new model to their processes, adapting it to what is now considered “normal”. However, the lack of experience and lack of management skills have made remote work an inefficient method in the cases where it is not well conducted.

In our search for the implementation of best practices, we find a new report from the Association for Talent Development (ATD) sponsored by Columbia Business School. This report examines the development of five specific skills—accountability, communication, collaboration, engagement, and listening and assessing—that are crucial to managerial success. Together, these five skills comprise the ACCEL model.

The “Model of a Winner Manager: ACCEL” is one of the most effective instruments that we have adapted to continue achieving favorable results in our organizational processes and in all the remote activities that we currently carry out.

Here are the 5 points that define the ACCEL model:

1.- Accountability

The delivery of results through reports with established deadlines and effective planning for the members of the organization result in the self-development of the team, generating the delivery of reports and accountability in time and form.

To execute this in the best possible way, the management activities of “check-in” and “one on one” are necessary. These strategies allow supervisors of each area to develop effective communication with team members, opening the way to horizontal communication in which the resolution of doubts, constant assistance and advice are constantly recognized.

2.-  Collaboration

The construction of a support basis among the members of each area is vital to generate a favorable collaboration that allows achieving an optimal working environment and culture to achieve common objectives.

Encouraging the work team to achieve partnership, support and effective relationships between them is one of the best ways to achieve excellent results together.

3.- Communication 

Effective communication is the most important tool for achieving an exchange of information with sustained feedback that serves for the improvement and optimization of activities carried out by the members of the company.

This ability involves three types of conversations you can have with members: disciplinary, training, and praise. If communication based on these three areas is achieved, targeted performance and guided coordination will be promoted.

Constant communication in the same way allows the team to have a sense of support, help and understanding even though there is no physical presence in the office. Remote work becomes more actionable.

4.- Engagement

Commitment is manifested as a form of constant motivation for all levels of company organization.

Generating this sense is not an easy task, to achieve it constant feedback and attention with the members of the team is required to generate in them a positive stimulation according to their work and their development within the company.

One way to facilitate engagement among collaborators is to define roles and responsibilities for members to identify the contributions they make to the company and recognize its value as an important place, because they are active and talented members.

5.- Listening and Assessing

Generating optimal information, collecting data and processing skills that members present to managers is of vital importance to achieve an understanding related to the delivery of results and reports generated in each area.

This point includes the emotional abilities, empathy and recognition of the team’s attitudes regarding the development of a project and/or activity. Identifying, valuing and feedbacking all the feelings, frustrations and motivations that exist on the team members allow managers to have enough emotional intelligence to carry out problem solving and with this, they can have a more efficient delivery of results.
